Mechanical problems delay storm cleanup at Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The state says mechanical problems are delaying its storm cleanup at the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor.
Officials say a front loader needed to haul away large piles of debris, but it wasn’t working.
So, the state is working to acquire some other equipment to start the heavy lifting tomorrow.
Meantime, volunteers with the Waikiki Yacht Club have been doing their best to clear debris.
“This debris had washing machines in it. It had mattresses. We’ve taken that all away, but it was all the way out to the channel. We’ve never seen anything like it,” Waikiki Yacht Club Commodore Ian Scott said.
“Our junior sailors couldn’t get out for two days, our paddlers couldn’t get out for two days, and we couldn’t get rid of it fast enough.
Boaters think the debris is because this weekend’s storm brought the first heavy rain in about seven months, and waterways were filled with illegally dumped items.
